Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium(IV) dichloride is used as a catalyst of the carboalumination of alkynes by trimethylaluminum to give an (alkenyl)dimethylalane, a versatile intermediate for further cross-coupling reactions for the synthesis of stereodefined trisubstituted olefins. This product can also be applied to prepare the Negishi reagent, Cp₂Zr(η₂-butene), which can be used as a source of Cp₂Zr in oxidative cyclization reactions. Also, Cp₂ZrCl₂ reacts with lithium aluminum hydride to give Cp₂ZrHCl Schwartz’s reagent. The Cp₂ZrCl₂/C₂H₅AlCl₂ system was found to be an active catalyst for the polymerization of alkynes.
