Nickel(II) 1-dimethylamino-2-methyl-2-butoxide, also known as Ni(dmamb)₂ or MABONi, is an organonickel compound with the molecular formula C₁₄H₃₂N₂O₂Ni and a molecular weight of 319.11 g/mol. This compound contains nickel in the +2 oxidation state, coordinated with two 1-dimethylamino-2-methyl-2-butoxide ligands, which create a stable yet highly reactive structure. Nickel(II) 1-dimethylamino-2-methyl-2-butoxide typically appears as a dark green viscous liquid with a purity of 98%+, verified by elemental analysis. Due to its sensitivity to air and moisture, the compound requires storage in an inert environment.

Applications in Organic and Inorganic Synthesis

This compound is widely used as a nickel precursor in material synthesis, particularly in the production of nickel-containing films through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques. Its unique structure, which includes dimethylamino and methylbutoxide groups, enables controlled deposition processes, making it ideal for creating thin films on semiconductor and microelectronic components. This compound’s stability and reactivity make it a valuable reagent for applications in both organic and inorganic synthesis, where precision in nickel incorporation is required.

Precautions for Safe Storage and Handling

Classified with hazard codes H315, H319, H334, H335, and H372, Nickel(II) 1-dimethylamino-2-methyl-2-butoxide can cause skin and eye irritation, respiratory issues, and long-term health risks upon exposure. It is recommended to handle this compound with appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety goggles, and respiratory protection in a well-ventilated area. Storage in sealed containers under an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, is essential to prevent exposure to air and moisture, which could lead to decomposition. The compound’s boiling point of approximately 90°C further necessitates controlled storage conditions.

Industrial and Laboratory Applications

In industrial and laboratory settings, Nickel(II) 1-dimethylamino-2-methyl-2-butoxide is critical for creating nickel-based thin films and coatings, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing. Its utility in ALD and CVD processes supports the development of high-performance electronic devices, enabling the formation of uniform, stable coatings on substrates. The compound’s controlled reactivity, high purity, and unique composition make it indispensable for applications requiring accurate nickel placement, advancing research and production in material sciences.

Nickel(II) 1-dimethylamino-2-methyl-2-butoxide with water and hydrogen sulfide as oxygen and sulfur sources were employed in the atomic layer deposition of nickel oxide and nickel sulfide thin films. Due to its volatility and liquid state at RT, this product is promising as a precursor for the growth of Ni-containing layers by MOCVD and ALD. Ni(dmamb)2 was employed as a precursor for the growth of nickel oxide NiO films on Si and Pt/SiO2/Si substrates at 230–410°C temperatures by cold-wall low-pressure MOCVD. The I–V measurements of NiO films grown using this product revealed an interesting switching behavior of the NiO films having low and high resistance states, suggesting their applicability as ReRAM devices.
