Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium, also known as MgCp₂ or Magnesocene, is an organomagnesium compound with the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₀Mg and a molecular weight of 154.49 g/mol. This compound features magnesium in the +2 oxidation state, coordinated with two cyclopentadienyl ligands, creating a stable sandwich structure characteristic of metallocenes. Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium appears as white crystals, has a purity of 99% verified by titration, and is highly sensitive to air and moisture, requiring storage in an inert, dry environment.
Applications in Organic and Inorganic Synthesis
Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium serves as a critical reagent in organometallic chemistry and is widely used for synthesizing various magnesium-containing compounds. Its structure, with two cyclopentadienyl ligands symmetrically bonded to magnesium, makes it effective in facilitating complex reactions, particularly in catalysis and polymerization. It is also valuable in producing magnesium-based materials and is frequently employed in reactions that require the precise addition of magnesium components.
Precautions for Safe Storage and Handling
Classified under hazard codes H228-2, H250, H260, H314, H318, and H335, Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium is flammable, pyrophoric, and highly reactive with water. It should be handled in a well-ventilated, moisture-free environment, ideally under an inert gas. Proper protective equipment, including gloves, goggles, and flame-resistant clothing, is essential to prevent exposure to its reactive nature. Additionally, storage in sealed containers away from heat and ignition sources is recommended to prevent accidental ignition.
Industrial and Laboratory Applications

The compound’s unique structure and reactivity make it a crucial agent in various organometallic transformations, especially in high-tech material science and chemical synthesis.
Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium(II) is the most popular p-doping precursor for GaN materials in the industry. This product was successfully applied as a precursor for chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) of magnesium metal film on carbon foams at 700-775°C substrate temperature. MgCp2 has been applied as a precursor for the MOCVD growth of MgO as passivating buffer layers for YBa2Cu3O7−x deposition on GaAs substrates. It is also has been applied for the growth of magnesium oxide thin films by atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) with water as an oxygen source, on soda-lime glass and Si(100) as substrates. This product is the most commonly used p-dopant in GaN-based materials as well as GaAs, AlGaAs, InP. See links below
