Iron(II) acetylacetonate, also known as Fe(acac)₂, ferrous acetylacetonate, or 2,4-pentanedione iron(II) derivative, is a red to brown powder with the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₄FeO₄ and a molecular weight of 254.06 g/mol. It is widely used in various chemical applications, particularly in catalysis and material science.

Ferrous acetylacetonate is stable under normal conditions but is sensitive to moisture. To preserve its integrity and reactivity, it should be stored in dry, air-tight containers. This compound has a melting point of approximately 210°C, making it suitable for processes that involve moderate to high temperatures.

Fe(acac)₂ is often used as a precursor in the synthesis of other iron-containing compounds and materials, particularly in the deposition of thin films via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes. It is also employed as a catalyst in organic reactions, where its reactivity and stability contribute to efficient chemical transformations.

Iron acetylacetonate is hazardous when in contact with skin and eyes, causing irritation (H315, H319). It may also cause respiratory discomfort if inhaled (H335). Therefore, proper personal protective equipment, such as gloves, goggles, and respirators, should be used when handling this compound, and it should be used in well-ventilated areas to minimize exposure to its dust or fumes.

Fe(acac)₂, or iron(II) acetylacetonate, is a versatile and reactive compound commonly used in catalysis, thin-film deposition, and material synthesis. Its high purity and reactivity make it valuable in advanced industrial processes, though care must be taken to handle it safely due to its hazardous nature.

Iron(II) Acetylacetonate is an Iron source that is soluble in organic solvents as an organometallic compound. The high purity acetylacetonate anion complexes by bonding each oxygen atom to the metallic cation to form a chelate ring, because of this property, acetylacetonates are commonly used in various catalysts and catalytic reagents for organic synthesis, including the fabrication of various shapes of carbon nanostructures via the use of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and laser evaporation techniques. The numerous commercial applications for Iron include primary colorant in glass and ceramics, catalyst, basis for low-grade magnets and because of its magnetic properties is used extensively in memory tape.  See link below
