Silicon(IV) iodide, also known as tetraiodosilane or silicon iodide, is an off-white powder with the molecular formula SiI₄ and a molecular weight of 535.7 g/mol. This compound is composed of a silicon atom bonded to four iodine atoms, forming a tetrahedral structure. With a high purity level of 99.99%, verified by titration, silicon(IV) iodide is used in various chemical processes and applications, particularly in high-tech industries.
This compound appears as an off-white solid and is highly sensitive to moisture and air. Its melting point is approximately 120°C, and it must be stored in dry, air-free conditions to prevent decomposition. Silicon tetraiodide applies for the manufacturing and etching of silicon wafers used in microfabrication of electronic related components. This product has been used for the syntheses of Tetrakis(dialkylamino)silanes. SiI4 was proposed as a potential precursor for the deposition of Si-based films by CVD. SiI4 is advantageous, as it is a simple Si-contaning precursor which can be used in thermally or UV-assisted CVD deposition processes.
