Silicon(IV) iodide, also known as tetraiodosilane or silicon iodide, is an off-white powder with the molecular formula SiI₄ and a molecular weight of 535.7 g/mol. This compound is composed of a silicon atom bonded to four iodine atoms, forming a tetrahedral structure. With a high purity level of 99.99%, verified by titration, silicon(IV) iodide is used in various chemical processes and applications, particularly in high-tech industries.

This compound appears as an off-white solid and is highly sensitive to moisture and air. Its melting point is approximately 120°C, and it must be stored in dry, air-free conditions to prevent decomposition. The high metal purity of 99.999%-Si makes it particularly suited for applications where ultra-pure silicon is required, such as in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced material synthesis.

Often utilized in organic synthesis and materials science, silicon iodide (SiI₄) serves as a precursor in the preparation of other silicon-based compounds. Its decomposition into silicon and iodine under specific conditions allows its use in processes like chemical vapor deposition (CVD), aiding in the production of high-purity thin films.

Handling this compound requires caution due to its hazardous nature. It can be harmful if ingested (H301), causes severe skin and eye irritation (H311, H314, H318), and may trigger allergic skin reactions or respiratory issues (H317, H334). Additionally, it is recognized as a reproductive hazard (H360). Protective gear, including gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection, is essential to minimize exposure during its use. Proper ventilation and storage in moisture-free environments are also necessary to ensure safety.

Silicon(IV) iodide is a highly reactive and valuable compound in advanced material applications, especially where high-purity silicon is needed. Its reactivity and sensitivity make it a key substance in specialized industrial and research settings, provided that adequate safety measures are followed.

Silicon tetraiodide applies for the manufacturing and etching of silicon wafers used in microfabrication of electronic related components. This product has been used for the syntheses of Tetrakis(dialkylamino)silanes. SiI4 was proposed as a potential precursor for the deposition of Si-based films by CVD. SiI4 is advantageous, as it is a simple Si-contaning precursor which can be used in thermally or UV-assisted CVD deposition processes. SiI4 has a simple structure and does not require laborious synthetic procedures. Tetraiodosilane also provides high film growth rates and low minimum film deposition temperatures. See link below.
