Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride, also known as Di(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium(IV) dichloride or Zirconocene dichloride, is an organometallic compound with the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₀Cl₂Zr and a molecular weight of 292.32 g/mol. This white crystalline powder has a purity of 98%+, verified by gravimetric assay, and is sensitive to moisture, requiring dry storage conditions.
Applications in Organic and Inorganic Synthesis
Dichlorodicyclopentadienylzirconium is widely used in synthesis as a catalyst or a precursor in polymerization reactions, particularly in creating advanced polymers and coordinating metal complexes. Its stable structure and reactivity make it useful in both organic and inorganic synthesis.
Precautions for Safe Storage and Handling
Though not classified as a regulated hazardous material, moisture sensitivity necessitates careful storage in sealed containers in a dry environment. Standard protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection, is recommended to ensure safe handling.
Industrial and Laboratory Applications
Zirconocene dichloride is essential in producing specialty polymers, particularly in research and development environments. Its role as a catalyst extends to applications in materials science and the synthesis of zirconium-based compounds, where it helps facilitate complex organometallic transformations crucial in high-performance materials.
Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium(IV) dichloride is used as a catalyst of the carboalumination of alkynes by trimethylaluminum to give an (alkenyl)dimethylalane, a versatile intermediate for further cross-coupling reactions for the synthesis of stereodefined trisubstituted olefins. This product can also be applied to prepare the Negishi reagent, Cp2Zr(η2-butene), which can be used as a source of Cp2Zr in oxidative cyclization reactions. Also, Cp2ZrCl2 reacts with lithium aluminum hydride to give Cp2ZrHCl Schwartz’s reagent. The Cp2ZrCl2/C2H5AlCl2 system was found to be an active catalyst for the polymerization of alkynes.
