Tris(acetylacetonato)aluminium, also known as Al(acac)₃, is a white to yellow powder with the molecular formula C₁₅H₂₁AlO₆ and a molecular weight of 324.31 g/mol. This compound, with a purity of 99.90% verified by complexometric (EDTA) titration and a metal purity of 99.99%-Al, is a widely used aluminium complex in various chemical and industrial applications, particularly in organic synthesis and material science.

Aluminium 2,4-pentanedionate is highly valued for its role as a precursor in the synthesis of thin films, often utilized in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes. These thin films are integral to the production of high-performance materials in electronics and nanotechnology. The compound’s stability and high purity make it an essential reagent in the creation of aluminium-based materials.

Al(acac)₃ is sensitive to environmental factors, particularly moisture, and should be stored in tightly sealed containers to maintain its integrity. The substance is generally stable under normal storage conditions, but proper precautions must be taken to prevent contamination or degradation, which could affect its reactivity and performance in high-precision applications.

Tris(2,4-pentanedionato)aluminium is commonly used as a catalyst in organic synthesis and as a reagent in the preparation of other aluminium-containing compounds. Its versatility extends to applications in the coatings and ceramics industries, where its controlled decomposition allows for the creation of uniform aluminium oxide layers.

Handling this compound requires caution due to its classification as hazardous. It can be harmful if ingested (H300), cause skin irritation (H315), and lead to eye irritation (H319). Inhalation of the powder may also cause respiratory discomfort (H335). As such, protective gloves, goggles, and adequate ventilation are necessary when working with this substance.

Al(acac)₃, also referred to as tris(acetylacetonato)aluminium or tris(2,4-pentanedionato)aluminium, is a high-purity compound used in advanced material synthesis, catalysis, and thin-film deposition. Its specific reactivity and stability make it invaluable in high-tech applications, though care must be taken during handling to ensure safety and product integrity.

Aluminium acetylacetonate and synthetic air were applied for the atmospheric pressure hot-wall MOCVD-growth of Al2O3 thin films on stainless steel substrates. This product was used as a precursor for the deposition of carbonaceous crystalline Al2O3 films on Si(100) by LP MOCVD, as well as on stainless steel, and TiN-coated cemented carbide substrates by LP MOCVD in the absence of oxidant gas. Al(acac)3 was applied for the growth of Al2O3 films on Si(111) substrates at varying temperatures by MOCVD. One more application is as a nontoxic and easy-to-handle precursor for the deposition of amorphous Al2O3 thin films on glass and Si(100) substrates by a low-temperature atmospheric-pressure CVD.
